When a person hears the word war, the mind immediately turns to armies, weapons, battles, and destruction. Yet spiritual teaching reveals that the true war does not begin on the battlefields of the earth, but within the fields of the human heart and mind.
According to Inner Christianity, the real war is an inner war, a struggle that takes place inside the human being. As it is stated, “the Holy War is in our heart, in our mind, within us,” and for this reason it is called Inner Christianity rather than an external one.
The Inner War of the Human Being
The teaching explains that every human being faces two adversaries:
- an inner adversary, consisting of illusions, passions, attractions, repulsions, and misunderstandings,
- and an outer adversary, which appears through the influences and pressures of the world. Makridis-2016-WEB
These two adversaries create a constant inner struggle.
However, this war is not directed against other human beings. It is a war against denial, ignorance, and egoism. The spiritual person therefore does not fight people, but rather fights the negative elements that exist within human nature.
This spiritual struggle is described in a very clear way:
“I fight a spiritual battle… I do not fight the person who carries denial within him, but I try to remove that denial and place within him a healthy knowledge.”
Thus, war becomes an act of healing and transformation rather than destruction.
The World in a State of War
Humanity lives in a constant state of war. This war does not always involve weapons. It appears in many forms:
- anxiety
- stress
- conflict
- pressure
- the relentless struggle for survival
All these conditions represent forms of war because they deprive the human being of inner peace. For this reason, when Christ appeared to His disciples after the Resurrection, His first words to them were:
“Peace be unto you.”
This peace is not merely the absence of conflict. It is an inner harmony, where the spirit governs the soul and the material nature.
The True Spiritual Warrior
In spiritual life, the true warrior is not the one who conquers others.
It is the one who conquers oneself. The spiritual warrior:
- does not panic before external events,
- does not identify with crises or disturbances,
- maintains inner peace even when the world around them is in turmoil.
The teaching indicates that even if war erupts in the world, a person who lives in faith can remain inwardly calm and trusting in God. Makridis-2016-WEB
This attitude is not indifference, but spiritual freedom.
The Victory of the Inner War
The purpose of the inner war is ultimately the birth of love within the human being.
When a person:
- purifies the mind,
- humbles the ego,
- and allows God to act within them,
then war is transformed into a path toward peace. Such a person becomes a bearer of peace in the world. In this way, the deeper meaning of Christian life is fulfilled: to overcome the war within the human being so that the peace of God may appear within the world.
War is not only a historical or political event but a spiritual condition. Its root lies in the egoism and ignorance of the human being.
The solution is not merely external peace, but inner transformation. For when the human being conquers the war within, they become what Christ called His disciples to be:
bearers of peace, light, and love within the world.
