Dear brothers and sisters,
The Transfiguration of the Savior is not only a wonderful event from the earthly life of Jesus. It is not only the moment when the disciples saw His face shine and His clothes become bright with light. For the person who searches for the inner meaning of the Teaching, the Transfiguration is a revelation. It reveals who Christ truly is. But at the same time, it also reveals what the human being is called to become. On the mountain, Christ does not suddenly receive the Light. The Light was already within Him. What happens is that, for a moment, His inner glory becomes visible to the disciples. Matter can no longer hide the Spirit. The human form becomes transparent to the Divine Presence. And then the mystery of the Transfiguration is revealed.
The Transfiguration reveals the Christ within
Jesus appears to His disciples as a human being. He walks, speaks, becomes tired, and lives within the conditions of human life. But within this human form there is the fullness of another reality. There is Christ. There is the Word. There is the Light. In the Transfiguration, what had until then been hidden behind the human form becomes visible. So we should not see this event only as an outward miracle. It is a revelation of the true state of Christ. And here we find the first great spiritual teaching: Within the form there is something much greater than the form itself.
The same mystery exists, in a different degree, within every human being. Under our weaknesses, contradictions, illusions, fears, and passions, there is a deeper destiny. There is the possibility of becoming Christ-like. There is the possibility of transformation.
The flesh becomes Light
In the teaching of Inner Christianity, we meet a powerful question: Can corruption pass into incorruption?
Can the flesh become Light?
And how can this transformation take place within the human being?
The direction given is clear: It happens when Spirit fully overcomes and governs matter.
Here we find one of the deepest meanings of the Transfiguration of the Savior. Christ shows us that matter is not the enemy of Spirit. Matter can be transformed by Spirit. The purpose, therefore, is not to destroy human nature. It is to transform it. It is not to reject matter. It is to spiritualize it. It is not to escape from being human. It is to bring the human being into Christ.
Mount Tabor exists within us
There is also an inner Mount Tabor. It is that place within consciousness where the human being rises above the noise of the personality and begins to meet the true Self. But this ascent requires effort. We cannot climb the mountain while carrying all our attachments with us. Something must be left behind. Pride. The need to always be right. Judgment. Resentment. Self-interest. Fear. Attachment to the personality.
For this reason, the spiritual path is also a path of purification. In the realm of Inner Christianity, discipleship is presented as a demanding process of becoming free from illusion and from everything corruptible, so that the human being may finally receive a new “garment” — a garment of Truth, Light, and Love. This is deeply connected with transformation. The human being gradually leaves behind the old way of living so that something new can appear from within.
Transformation begins in consciousness
Before our life can change, the way we think must change. Before our relationships can change, the way we see other people must change. Before our world can change, our consciousness must change. If I still see my brother as an enemy, I have not yet been transformed. If I continue to return evil for evil, I have not yet been transformed. If I continue to seek only for myself, I have not yet been transformed. If spiritual knowledge makes me proud instead of more humble, then it has not yet become Light within me. True transformation becomes visible in everyday life. In the way I speak. In the way I think. In the way I forgive. In the way I respond to someone who hurts me. In the way I use my strength. In whether I can love without demanding something in return. This is where the true Mount Tabor is found.
Spirit must become greater than matter
Matter, in this deeper spiritual meaning, does not refer only to the physical body. It also means the whole world of corruption that has been built within us. Our automatic reactions. Our fears. The desires that control us. Our attachments. Our need for approval. The rule of the ego.
When these things govern the human being, Spirit remains hidden. But when inner work begins, the relationship slowly changes. Fear no longer governs. Faith begins to govern. Judgment no longer governs. Discernment begins to govern. Self-interest no longer governs. Love begins to govern. Personal will no longer rules everything. The human being begins to seek the Divine Will.
This is the victory of Spirit. And this victory is not forced. It takes place through conscious discipleship.
Transformation is not a sudden miracle
It would be easy to expect one moment of illumination that suddenly changes our whole being. But real transformation is built every day. Every time we change a thought of judgment into understanding, something is transformed. Every time we choose peace instead of returning an insult, something is transformed. Every time we give up an egoistic demand for the sake of unity, something is transformed. Every time we forgive, something is transformed. Every time we give without expecting anything back, something is transformed. In this way, matter slowly begins to become Light.
“Listen to Him”
At the Transfiguration, there is an important command: Listen to Christ.
But what does it really mean to listen to Him? It does not only mean reading His words. It means turning His words into life. When He says, “Love one another,” we must love. When He teaches forgiveness, we must forgive. When He teaches humility, we must let go of the need to feel superior. When He calls us to unity, we must stop creating division. Christ does not simply ask for listeners. He asks for disciples.
And a disciple is someone who turns the Teaching into daily action. In the teaching of Inner Christianity, this is described as a practical understanding and expression of the Teaching, so that spiritual truth becomes part of everyday life.
From Transfiguration to becoming Christ-like
Here we come to the heart of the teaching. The Transfiguration of the Savior was not given to us only so that we may admire Christ. It shows us the destiny of the human being. Christ is the example. The human being is the disciple. And the path is the path of becoming Christ-like.
To become Christ-like means that the qualities of Christ begin to enter every part of our being. Our thoughts begin to take on the quality of Christ. Our words begin to take on the quality of Christ. Our relationships begin to take on the quality of Christ. Our giving begins to take on the quality of Christ. Even the way we deal with negativity begins to take on the quality of Christ.
So it is not enough to say: “I believe in Christ.”
The deeper question is:
How much space have I given Christ to transform me?
Coming down from the mountain
The spiritual life does not end on Mount Tabor. After the Transfiguration, the disciples come down from the mountain. This is very important.
We do not rise into Spirit in order to escape from the world. We rise in order to receive Light, and then we return to bring that Light into the world. If we have truly prayed, we should return more loving. If we have known the Light, we should bring light to others. If we have received peace, we should become peace. If we have received Love, we should share it. Light that is not shared can become another form of spiritual possession. So the person of Spirit returns to everyday life. To the family. To work. To difficulties. To human relationships. There we discover whether Mount Tabor was a real experience.
Our own Transfiguration
Let us not see the Transfiguration only as something that happened to Jesus two thousand years ago.
Let us see it as an invitation.
Christ shows us what can happen when Spirit becomes greater than matter.
He shows us that corruption is not our final destiny.
He shows us that the human being is not condemned to remain trapped in imperfection.
He shows us that another way of being is possible.
The flesh can become Light.
Not simply through an outward change, but through the full rule of Spirit within the human being.
Fear can become Faith.
Judgment can become Discernment.
Self-interest can become Offering.
Division can become Unity.
The human ego can slowly give way to Christ Consciousness.
And the human being can become a bearer of Divine Love.
This is the inner message of the Transfiguration.
Conclusion — The Mount Tabor of the heart
Beloved human being,
do not only ask to see the Light of Christ.
Ask to become transparent to His Light.
Do not only ask to understand the Transfiguration of Jesus.
Ask for your own transformation to begin.
Look within yourself.
Which part of your being still needs Light?
Which thought needs to be transformed?
Which relationship needs Love?
Which resentment needs forgiveness?
Which fear needs Faith?
Which part of the ego needs to surrender?
There is your own Mount Tabor.
And every time you allow Christ to transform one dark place within you, a small light is lit inside you.
Until the time comes when Light is no longer only a temporary experience.
It becomes your life.
Your thought becomes Light.
Your word becomes Light.
Your action becomes Light.
Your love becomes Light.
And then the Transfiguration of the Savior will no longer be only a great Christian feast for you.
It will become a living path.
The path from the human being of corruption to the human being of Spirit.
From the ego to Unity.
From matter that rules, to Spirit that gives life.
From human love to Divine Love.
From the old human being to the new.
From the human being to the Christ-filled human being.
And perhaps then we will begin to understand the deepest mystery of Mount Tabor:Christ was transfigured before the human being in order to reveal the path of the human being’s own transformation.
