The Causes and Forms of Sorrow

May every sorrow of yours be blessed to become a passage and not a dwelling place. May your mind open to hold more Truth, and may Love flow freely into your heart, your words and your deeds.

A spiritual teaching inspired by Chapter 10 of the book “Master John” (Δάσκαλος Ιωάννης)

Beloved student and follower of the Path,

There are moments on your journey toward Union when something within you grows heavy. Your momentum fades, your heart darkens, and you call what you feel sorrow. Do not rush to fear it, and do not rush to condemn it. Sorrow is not one thing. It has different roots, and anyone who walks consciously needs to know where their inner state comes from, so they can transform it through Prayer and Union rather than sink into it.

The Sorrow of Union

The first kind of sorrow arises because you are united. The more your heart opens, the more you feel the pain of the world: the disharmony gathered upon the planet, the lack of Love and Light in places, in nations, in the people around you. You feel it not because you are weak, but because you are no longer separate from Humanity and the Earth.

This sorrow has not come to imprison you. It is awareness. It shows you vividly what is happening so that you can respond just as vividly, by radiating Light, Love and Unity from within. The very Union that makes you ache is what has made you able to bless, to restore, and to transform all that you receive.

The Sorrow of Separation

There is another sorrow, which springs from the opposite movement. It is born not of Union but of its absence. It comes when you withdraw from the path, when Love within you grows still, when understanding is missing. Its fruit is separation: you feel far from people, far from the Earth, far from the Work you serve.

In this state Prayer becomes difficult, because the very impulse of Love that makes it spontaneous and alive is missing. And yet this is the first thing you are called to do: recognize the state and direct your Prayer to that exact place of lack. Cleanse the center of your heart and let that cleansing spread through your whole being. Dare to bring the deprivation you feel into the light, so you can see it, understand it, discover what led you there, and be set free.

The Root Lies in the Mind

Notice something subtle. The narrowness you feel in your heart does not always begin in the heart. Often it begins in the mind. Love is infinite, and when your mind cannot hold ideas larger than itself, it closes within its limits and pushes away whatever invites it to expand.

The Divine energy flowing toward you then gathers in the mind, pressing to break the frame you have drawn. While that struggle lasts, too little flows on to the heart, and Love does not reach your actions, your words, your movements. So when this sorrow visits you, ask yourself: What limit am I holding in my mind? What deeper truth am I refusing to make room for?

How to Tell Them Apart

You may reasonably ask: how will I know which sorrow I am living?

The sorrow of Union carries within it a seed of Life. It may stop you for a while, only as long as you need to understand where you are called to act, and then it moves you toward giving and transformation. The sorrow of separation carries inertia, stagnation and inner division. It whispers that you can do nothing, that it simply closes around you.

That whisper is an illusion. When you hear it, answer with Prayer, cleansing and transformation, so that you open again, receive Truth, and turn the Truth you receive into Consciousness, Love and expression.

The Courage to Express

Here lies one of the greatest keys of the path: expression. You must leave behind the fear of revealing what is within you. You cannot overcome what you have not recognized, and you cannot truly recognize it while you keep it hidden. Your inhibitions are remnants of your old way of thinking; the path of becoming Christ-like builds within you a new way of seeing.

It is far heavier to carry an unexpressed disharmony than to bring it into the light and transform it. Ignorance blocks the way upward; knowledge opens the door to change and brings you into harmony with the Laws of Balance, Love, Forgiveness and Mercy.

And when you see imperfection in yourself, do not remain in guilt and remorse. These belong to an earlier stage of your training. Now you are called to love your imperfection, to transform it, to make amends wherever you have caused harm, and to establish within you a balance that will not let you fall back into the same patterns.

The Gift of Expression

Expression holds one more gift. You believe you understand a teaching when you hear it or read it. You do, to a degree. But when, inspired and united with the Divine within you, you try to express it yourself, you will find that it becomes part of you. It is no longer something outside you; it becomes lived experience.

So share with others what you are taught, not as a repetition of words but as a testimony of life. What you have not made your own you cannot pass on in its purity; without meaning to, you will add to it elements of your personality. But what springs from within you carries strength, clarity, and a seed of awakening for whoever receives it.

For Your Personal Practice

  • When sorrow comes, pause and ask: Does it unite me or separate me? Does it call me to act, or does it paralyze me?
  • If it calls you to act, turn it into Prayer and blessing for the place, person or situation that touched you.
  • If it paralyzes you, turn to your mind and look for the limit you are holding. Pray into the center of your heart, even when it is hard.
  • Do not hide what you are living. Speak it, write it, bring it into the light with discernment, so you can see it and transform it.
  • Love your imperfection instead of punishing it.

May every sorrow of yours be blessed to become a passage and not a dwelling place. May your mind open to hold more Truth, and may Love flow freely into your heart, your words and your deeds.
